Badlands Hike 2009

Badlands Hike 2009
Classique Défi
16 October, 2009 - 18 October, 2009

Unfortunately, this challenge was un-doable due to bad weather. The bentonitic soil in the badlands is extremely slippery when wet. Our club decided it would be wiser to cancel the trip, rather than risk injury on the slippery slopes. Subsequent attempts to re-schedule the trip were foiled again by bad weather. Watch for more challenges, we ain't quittin' yet!!!

The Lakeland College Outdoor Rec Club is going fossil hunting! With a real, live paleontologist, no less! We'll camp near our hiking site at an old Lakeland Alumni's dude ranch. We'll spend the first day hiking in and around Dry Island Provincial Park, which has some amazing and beautifully rugged geography and history. Tim Schowalter will be along with us to identify dinosaur teeth, duck-billed dinosaur legs, and the tiniest shards of really old fish scales that you can imagine. The next day, we'll head outside the park and hunt for more fossils. There are some opportunities for fishing in the river, weather permitting.

Like all our trips, this is a bring-your-own-food, split-the-gas, have-a-ball kind of trip. Bring your hiking boots and curiosity ;)

This is a trip our club does on a yearly basis. This year, we'll be making The Big Wild a part of our adventure! We'll be working at the gate for the Lakeland College Corn Maze this Thanksgiving weekend to raise money for our trip. We'll donate a portion of the proceeds to the Big Wild. Stay tuned for more challenges in the near future!
