On August 18th Frank Wolf and Taku Hokoyama successfully completed a 2,000 km canoe journey from Yellowknife to Rankin Inlet. The 46-day trip spanned the 'land of little sticks' in the East to the rocky Barren Ground of Hudson Bay- travelling through the heart of the largest wilderness area in North America.
Hi all, we've just come back from our trip and it was absolutely mind-blowing. And what a surprise to see that Janet had organized a donation in which we were lucky enough to have it made in the name of our trip. Thanks Janet!
In addition to making donations, I'd like to bring your attention to the fact that signing online petitions can also make a huge difference. Politicians and policy makers alike will listen when enough people speak up (i.e. they feel threatened about their seat). So if donating money isn't your thing, please consider filling an online petition related to conservation, climate change, or the environment in general.
Here are some suggestions, but by no means is this list exhaustive.
Forest Ethics
http://www.forestethics.org/
as far as I'm concerned, these are the folks that got Ontario to commit to protecting 50% of the remaining untracked boreal forest in their province.
Living Oceans Society
http://www.livingoceans.org/
remember, less than 1% of all marine areas are protected. Its not enough to just protect coastline! Click on the categories under "Programs".
CPAWS
http://www.cpaws.org/chapters/
google your local chapter and sign any petitions they have that directly pertain to your neck of the woods. Might as wells start with your own back yard, and if you have time, keep moving right across the country!
Power Up Canada
http://www.powerupcanada.ca/
these folks have the tarsands in their cross hairs
David Suzuki Foundation
http://www.davidsuzuki.org/
this website serves as an umbrella for all the various organizations out there that are trying to make a positive difference, environmentally. Don't burn out by trying to fill them all out at once. Take your time and spend a few weeks completing this one. Top left menu is what you want.
Thanks everyone for helping keep our world a better place. Drop me a line at thokoyama@mec.ca if you wanna chat.
looking forward to the stories and photos from your trip! and maybe if we're lucky a film too?
