Sometimes the most simple days in nature make for the best times. This was exactly the case of my girlfriend and I's paddle on a sweet section of the Kootenay River in South Eastern B.C. The weather was phenomenal and the water was high and fast. It was our first time on the river, and its beauty and power humbled us both! Although this section was only upwards of class 3 rapids, it provided us with a number of big fun flowing waves, awesome limestone canyon walls, and great wildlife viewing. Although we both love to canoe, this exploratory mission was actually part of our job responsibility. We would spend the next 2 months guiding clients down this section in SOAR raft like inflatable canoes. Life is tough I tell ya. The river was gleaming with a aqua blue and the mountains and surrounding landscape stood so completely still, It was almost as though they were fake.I think we barely said more than a dozen words to each other for the majority of the day due to the shear beauty. The river banks were lined with animal tracks of various size and species, reminding us we were back in the wild again! To top off a perfect day of river running, we startled a pair of deer who proceeded to run a length of rocky bank, and then plunge into the water swimming directly in front of our canoe. The Canadian wilderness never ceases to amaze us.
We look forward to many more fun in the sun paddles this season.
