Quetico canoe trip 2009

Quetico canoe trip 2009

After travelling to Ontario for a family wedding, we borrowed Peter's canoe and truck and headed northwest from Thunder Bay to Quetico Provincial Park. We put in at Dawson Trail Ranger station and enjoyed a week of beautiful paddling, despite a good deal of rain (seems to be a theme for our summer vacations). Highlights included: seeing a wolf only meters away from the canoe, taking in the ancient petroglyphs, Sturgeon Lake's beautiful scenery, thunderstorms, taking portages that have been around since the time of the fur trade, and the most robust population of mosquitoes I have ever, ever witnessed. They were amazing -- nary a bug until the sun went down, and then there were so many that sometimes the noise outside the tent would wake me up in the middle of the night.
