Adventrek 2009
Expédition Défi
29 August, 2009 - 5 September, 2009

9th Juan de Fuca Venturers (Scouts Canada) took part in Adventrek 2009. Our six members joined a larger group of 19 youth and adults canoeing and kayaking for a week in Kyuquot Sound on the West coast of Vancouver Island.

We travelled in bays and around  islands, visited beaches, streams and rivers, and looked out on the temperate rainforest and coastal mountains.

We visited the Tasish River, camped at Yaku Bay, Rugged Pt. and a small bay across from Amai Point. We saw all kinds of wildlife; eagles, sea otters, seals, sea lions, kingfishers, anenomes, sea stars, red squirrels, stellars jays, black bears, and a whale.

Weather was the deciding point for all our travel/camping plans, as we encountered strong winds for much of the trip. Decisions were made by the adult advisors, but youth were involved in all discussions and had a chance to put forth their opinions and suggestions, learning outdoor skills that will stick with them for a lifetime.

Our group included 4 Venturers (teenage members of Scouts Canada) and 2 adult Advisors. The youth prepared for the trip by taking a week long summer camp at High Point Education (http://highpointeducation.com/) in Victoria, where they earned certificates in Standard and Wilderness First Aid, Advanced tandem canoeing, Leadership, and Heritage arts and Survival Skills.

Please consider making a donation to THE BIG WILD. We've set a goal of $200, but really want to raise a lot more than that to help save Canada's wild spaces.  Click on the pink "Sponsor this Challenge"  button on the right hand side of your screen. THANKS!
